Leading Through Radical Disruption: The Leaders Who Rise When the World Shakes

Not every leader crumbles when the ground shifts. In fact, some grow stronger. In this week's episode of The Tech Leaders Playbook, Mark Monchek - founder and Chief Opportunity Officer of Opportunity Lab - shared why the best leaders are not only surviving but thriving by leading through radical disruption in the turbulence of our times.

Raised at the intersection of business, art, and psychology, Mark’s family history is steeped in resilience. His grandparents survived the Holocaust, rebuilt their lives from nothing, and launched successful businesses. His father, a psychiatrist, and his mother, an artist, instilled curiosity and creative problem-solving from an early age. These lessons shaped his lifelong approach to leading through radical disruption.

Why Leading Through Radical Disruption Feels Different Today

Mark has studied periods of upheaval from the 1918 pandemic to the Great Depression. But unlike past crises, disruption today is hitting every dimension of life at once - economic, technological, political, and environmental. Leaders are facing a “full-spectrum” storm, and the old playbooks aren’t enough.

His advice starts with finding your “place to stand.” Instead of reacting impulsively, create space - through meditation, time in nature, or even quiet reflection - to see where the true points of leverage lie. From that grounded place, leaders can turn fear into decisive, opportunity-driven action.

Unlocking Hidden Strengths in Your Network During Radical Disruption

One of the most powerful tools for leading through radical disruption is tapping into the resources you already have but may overlook. Mark shared the story of the Literacy Assistance Center, which needed millions in funding. By mapping their collective connections, they uncovered unexpected links - including three members of the Soros family - that helped them raise capital and awareness.

Mark stresses that collaboration is key. Partnerships, even with competitors, can unlock innovation, resilience, and speed in ways no single organization can achieve alone.

From Scarcity to Abundance While Leading Through Change

Leaders often guard their resources, fearing they’ll lose their edge. But Mark challenges that thinking. Generosity, he says, is infectious - and the most successful people are the ones who give freely, creating a cycle of reciprocity that strengthens entire networks.

For tech leaders in particular, moving from an “I” mindset to a “we” mindset can mean the difference between scrambling to keep up and shaping the future.

Leading Through Radical Disruption with Purpose

At the heart of Mark’s philosophy is the belief that every leader must understand their higher purpose - both personally and in business. When disruption strikes, reconnecting with that purpose keeps decision-making grounded and forward-focused.

That’s why he’s bringing together mid-market CEOs and leaders for the upcoming Disrupted Work Reimagined UnConference in New York - where Avetis will also be featured! The event will focus on real-world collaboration, actionable frameworks, and relationships that extend far beyond the day’s agenda. This is definitely something you can't afford to miss - make sure to request your invitation here before spaces run out!
