Ways to Catch the Eye or Ear of a Recruiter

We have picked up 6 tips on how to attract recruiters and find the job you’re looking for. Sit back and check out what we have in store for you.

Optimize Your Online Presence

Recruiters can’t notice you if you’re not online. Once you’re online, you need to speak the same language. Social media is the primary tool recruiters use to search and attract potential candidates, primarily LinkedIn. When a recruiter goes online they filter searches through specific keywords; do a google search for which industry or job keywords are trending in your field of interest.

Be strategic with keywords, if coding is what you do state which languages you’re experienced with. Stay away from generic keywords that don’t increase your chances of being seen in the recruiter’s search. Avoid generic titles, it’s a challenge, but do avoid it when possible. One remedy is to sprinkle your job description with buzz keywords that are specific to the position.

Picture Day

A picture is worth a thousand words, so make it count. In fact, if you don’t have a profile picture, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. Profiles with a picture are much more likely to be viewed than those without one. Keep in mind, the profile picture should reflect who you are, but don’t forget the purpose is to connect to business opportunities, so don’t go too crazy.

Get Busy Online

If you’re fortunate enough to get a referral, one of the first things a recruiter will do is check you out online. The competition is stiff, and this is when a thorough profile is helpful. To be a player in the game, add meaningful information; highlight your skills, education, experience, philanthropy efforts, etc.

Your connections can give you additional exposure. The number of contacts is influential, but they should be quality connections. If you don’t have many contacts, join groups; ask colleagues, coworkers, family, and friends. Recruiters are continually broadening their network and look favorably on well-connected people.

Word of Mouth

Never underestimate the power of word-of-mouth. Here is when those much-needed connections come into play. There’s nothing more impactful than having your name dropped from your professional network. Make a habit of regularly connecting to your network and be strategic with your contacts. Build professional diversity across business categories and establish your voice within groups. Scheduling a calendar reminder is a way to ensure execution. Spend an hour or so once a month to drop a quick message to people in your network.

Who You Know Counts

Recruiters have ample company connections, and if you’ve been fortunate enough to work for an impressive company; use it to your advantage. By all means, include the name and relevant company information. Additionally, make sure to add universities, organizations, programs, and committees to your profile.

Check Your Messages

Connecting should be a full circle. Have email notifications sent to an active email account, and don’t forget to check your email frequently enough so that you can promptly respond to inquiries.
